It was always meant to be a book. But life got in the way.
The title came early, but Jack would tell you that it’s not supposed to be about his parents. Nevertheless, the title stuck. Everything else proved more difficult. There were too many ways of telling the story, and too many stories to tell.
‘Life behind Bars’ is about a pub, a restaurant, the people who work there and the people who pass through it. Some remain longer than they intend. Some leave, but not entirely.
Bella is at the centre of it, though she would not thank me for saying so.
What follows elsewhere on this site may, in time, amount to something resembling a narrative. Until then … it doesn’t.
